The Fire Precautions Act 1971 is commonly referred to as the FP Act or FPA

Tip No 1

Ensure you are aware of all your legal fire safety responsibilities under the fire precautions act 1971 before it is too late.

Ignorance of fire safety is no excuse so find out now.

The Fire Precautions Act requires a fire certificate for:-

Hotels with over 6 guests
Offices, Shops, Railway premises and Factories with:-
More than 20 persons employed or
More than 10 elsewhere than on the ground floor

 

Tip No 2

Check to see if your staff have been trained in fire safety by a competent person

SECTION 6 OF THE Fire Precautions Act

Requires staff to be trained in fire safety in the actions to be taken in case of fire

 

Tip No 3

Check to see if you have full and up to date adequate fire safety records readily available.

SECTION 6 OF THE Fire Precautions Act

Requires that records of the fire safety training must be kept and must show:-

Date of Fire Safety Training
Duration of Fire Safety Training
Location of Fire Safety Training
Who attended the Fire Safety Training
Who delivered the Fire Safety Training

 

Tip No 4

Check to see that you and your premises are within the law.

SECTION 7 OF THE Fire Precautions Act

States that contraventions of the Act may incur the following penalties which may be awarded for each and every offence:-

Up to £2,000 if heard in a Magistrates Court

"Each & every offence" means:-
One door locked = up to a £2,000 fine
Five doors locked = five times up to £2,000 or potentially £10,000 and a criminal record.

If heard in a Crown Court = Unlimited fine or up to two years in prison or both
